I’m in South Africa for a wine business conference at Stellenbosch University.  As is customary in these cases we get a welcome from the senior staff member (this time a Vice-Rector) for Research, Professor Eugene Cloete.  He reminds us that the University now has young people who were born after the end of apartheid, and have grown up with the promise of a better future.  ‘They have hoped for this, and now they are at university and they are becoming very angry because that hope is being denied them.’  The University, Professor Cloete says, needs to work to renew their hope.  It puts into perspective all our focus on wine, and gives a little more balance about what is really important in the world.
